The Lorraine Monument was built in the wake of the 1914-1918 war to celebrate the French victory of Charmes battle (also called the Mortagne battle: 24-26 August 1914).

Explo History and Description:

Charmes is a small Lorraine town on the Moselle, located between 2 big fortified cities : Toul (North) and Épinal (South). Charmes is on the Séré de Rivières fortification line, but it was left voluntarily without fortification, kind of trap, hoping to see the German rushing in this hole to catch them later.

After the French failure at Morhange, the German Kronprinz of Bavaria launched a large counter-offensive on the 20th August, entering the front in the direction of Charmes. The German succeeded in approaching Bayon and Rambervillers, but must give up because of the French resistance on their wings : at the "Grand Couronné" (Nancy, North) and at Chipote mountains (South).

Located on top of Mont, at an altitude of 385 metres, the monument is 13 metres high, with a large Lorraine cross.

A very interesting orientation table reproduces the battle field with the names and placements of all units.

My experience and personal tips:

For amateurs of WWI history : It is interesting to discover the battle of the "Charmes breach" by visiting the French and German military cemeteries. This pilgrimage has the advantage to bring you to many different picturesque villages. In addition, military cemeteries are peaceful and well maintained places.
