At 880m height, in the very pleasant frame of a epicea pine forest, stands a French military cemetery of the 14-18 war where rest more than 3,000 soldiers, especially Alpine Hunters, who died during the Linge battle (1915).

Explo History and Description:

See related article : " Le Linge "
"Le Linge" is a perfect example of the strategic nonsenses of this war. The French High command wanted absolutely an offensive by crests, while an important breakthrough in the valley of Munster had not been exploited. The German, who had had the time to strengthen their positions, were impregnable. Despite of the hesitations of the division commanders, the attack orders of the summits were maintained... The attacking battalions of hunters were almost annihilated, some counting until 80% of losses. 10,000 dead on the French side from June till October 1915, and 7,000 dead on the German side !

The Wettstein pass was the French back line during the attempts of conquest of "Le Linge"

The cemetery contains two ossuaries containing 1,337 bodies, and200 graves.

At the base of the big granite 13m high cross stands a statue representing a fighter fallen to the field of honour.

It is absolutely necessary to visit the memorial of "Le Linge", 3km away, and the German military cemetery of Baerenstall, 500 metres further. With Wettstein, these 3 sites are inseparable.

On second Sunday of august, ceremonies of the souvenir take place collectively in the French and German cemeteries of Wettstein and Baerenstall
